All football coaches must complete the Heads Up Certification process as provided by USA Football. Proof of completion is required to receive a coaches badge to access the sidelines of games. Be sure to print your certificate as proof of completion and have it with you at the official registration and weigh-in sessions.

USA Football has modified the process of getting coaches heads up certified. Promo Codes are no longer used to get the discounts and won’t be provided as in previous years. Coaches should use the applicable link below to take the certification course or the re-certification course/test. Using one of these links should ensure that the coaches receive the applicable discount of $10 instead of the regular price of $25.

If a coach does not currently have a USA Football Account, one can be acquired by clicking the USA Football icon to ensure they get the appropriate discounted rate.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

The Westside Bangals  & The Youth Football and Cheer Federation requires all staff members/volunteers at the league-level and those for each organization to submit to mandatory background check. This includes team officers, football & cheer coaches, team moms, etc. Each red-flagged record will be reviewed in accordance with applicable federal and state laws in conjunction with Federation policies and standards.

Our background checks are executed through Protect Youth Sports through a secure, online, customized volunteer portal. It is highly recommended to submit your background checks via a laptop or desktop computer. There are sometimes issues where the payment screen does not display on phones and tablets. Use of a laptop or desktop computer is recommended.

Protect Youth Sports is Accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS)

The NAPBS Background Screeners Credentialing Council (BSCC) has affirmed that Protect Youth Sports successfully proved compliance with the Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program (BSAAP) and is formally recognized as BSCC Accredited.

PLAYER AND CHEERLEADER REGISTRATION

​

All players/participants are required to provide the current YFF Registration Form along with a copy and the original verifying document. This information will be provided directly to the member organization/team the parent has chosen for their child(ren) to join. They must all then complete the online registration process as defined. Players should be prepared to register with the Federation and participate in the Federation's scheduled official registration/weigh-in sessions.

Official Registration Sessions​


The official registration session will be scheduled by the Federation in accordance with registration processes designed by the Federation’s Registration Staff. If a player is not completed registered by the final session, then he/she will not be allowed to play. Under no circumstances can a player play in a sanctioned Federation game/event without going through the official registration process. Illegal participation by a player not officially registered by the Federation will result in a forfeit of any games played AND a substantial fine to the member organization.

CONCUSSIONS IN YOUTH SPORTS

The West 10 Elite has a huge interest in the safety of our participants, and concussions in youth sports is a major focus item for several highly-respected institutions such as the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the National Football League (NFL), and USA Football. We share their concerns regarding concussions and is providing the information on this page for coaches, parents and our players to increase everyone's awareness of concussions and their potential impact on our young athletes.

  • Most concussions occur without loss of consciousness.

  • Recognition and proper response to concussions when they first occur can help prevent further injury or even death.


What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

Concussions can occur in any sport or recreation activity. So, all coaches, parents, and athletes need to learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs.

It’s Better to Miss One Game Than the Whole Season
To help ensure the health and safety of young athletes, CDC developed the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports initiative to offer information about concussions to coaches, parents, and athletes involved in youth sports. The Heads Up initiative provides important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to a concussion.

HYDRATION AND HEAT PREPAREDNESS

Every year a number of tragedies occur relating to heat stroke and dehydration. Proper hydration as well as recognizing and preventing heat illness are very important topics for all coaches and parents to understand.

Athletes, young and old, increase their risk of heat illness as they become dehydrated. According to the National Athletic Trainers' Association, it is not uncommon to reach dehydration levels significant enough to place athletes at risk of developing heat illness in as little as an hour of exercise. Athletes can reach this level even more rapidly if they begin the workout, practice or competition ALREADY DEHYDRATED. It is quite common for many young players to arrive at practice already dehydrated. A full day at school, running around at recess, gym class, not eating or drinking properly through out the day will all contribute to a child being dehydrated before practice even starts!
 
A Good Strategy for Proper Hydration

  1. Prehydrate - Before practice or game

  2. Hydrate - Throughout the practice or game

  3. Rehydrate - After the practice or game

Prehydration

  • Players should drink 16 oz of fluid first thing in the morning of a practice or game.

  • Players should consume 8-16 oz of fluid one hour prior to the start of the practice or game.

  • Players should consume 8-16 oz of fluid 20 minutes prior to the start of the practice or game.  


Hydration

  • Players should have unlimited access to fluids (sports drinks and water) throughout the game or workout.

  • Players should drink during the practice or game to minimize losses in body weight but should not over drink.

  • ALL PLAYERS should consume fluids during "water breaks". Many players will say that they are not thirsty; however, in many cases by the time they realize that they are thirsty they are already dehydrated or on their way to be dehydrated. Make sure all your players are getting the proper fluids.


Rehydration

  • Parents or Coaches should weigh players before and after practice. For each pound lost during the workout, an athlete should consume at least 24 oz of fluid. If this recommended amount of fluid is not consumed, the player must replace 80% of lost weight by next practice to avoid dehydration.

  • Players/Parents should check the color of a player's urine. If it is a dark, gold color (like apple juice) the player is already slightly dehydrated. If it is very pale yellow (like lemonade) then he is on the way to being hydrated.


Other Hydration Tips

  • Avoid carbonated drinks. They can cause bloating and may decrease the amount of fluid consumed.

  • Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol as they cause the body to lose body fluids.

  • Fluid containing carbohydrate and small amounts of sodium chloride are likely to have more beneficial effects than plain water.

  • Allow for acclimation - Acclimation is the body's adaptation to a hot environment. Slowly increase practice intensity and duration over the first two weeks of     training. Most cases of heat illness occur in the first 2 to 3 days of training.

  • Drink it. Don't pour it - A player pouring fluid over his/her head may feel great but won't help restore body fluids or lower body temperature.

  • Exercise in the morning or evening - This is when the weather is coolest. Also, avoid the direct sun to minimize radiant heat from the sun and hot playing surfaces.

  • Dress for the weather - Keeping cool in hot weather means wearing fewer clothes and frequently removing gear like helmets during breaks.


Ways to Recognize the Early Warning Signs of Dehydration
These can include but are not limited to:

  • Loss of Energy "Dizziness"

  • Loss of Coordination

  • Cramps

  • Headaches

  • Above Normal Levels of Fatigue

  • Dark Yellow Urine
